520 _aThe environmental and ecological challenges of the ecosphere affect the world of graphic design and, more broadly, that of visual communication, as they do many other sectors of activity. The current unprecedented critical state of affairs calls for a transformed perception and a new vision. We must assess the actual situation and ask the most relevant questions possible in order to understand the requisite paradigm shift, to become involved, and to accept our share of responsibility. For more than half a century, designers, writers, collectives, and also manifestos—mostly abroad—have been calling for a sustainable, ethical design. Graphic design needs to adopt the same approach, incorporating the ecological dimension in its fundamentals. Such objectives can provide a space for creativity, reflection, research, and work that is as stimulating as it is beneficial.
