520 _aThe birth, development, maturation, apex, and decay of a city cannot be understood only by the historical and social motivations for its existence. A city is the manifestation of the complex image of a desire, constituted by the conflict of distinct, antagonistic, and synchronic desires. This picture of the desire of a city is an imaginary creation that emerges from fears, joys, hopes, and dreams. These feelings project the concrete carpet over natural environments. The body of a city spreads over nature and alters it by the force of imagined desire. The collective will of the city displaces the old urban centers to other regions, which become the center of desire. The unwanted old centers fall into ruins. Thus, the city is a collection of images of desires about the present and the past, in constant motion.
