520 _aIn Spain the Gitano community is generally perceived as a cultural group absent from political life. In order to counteract this stereotyped perception, starting from a review of the history of anti-gypsyism, this paper analyzes the possibilities opened by the Gitano civil society organizations regarded as political players within the democracy. This analysis takes into account the advances and limitations of the Spanish integrationist approach to the Gitanos’ case. The article ends with an alternative to the integrationist approach: it introduces a discussion of civil and political liberties, as an outline of possible ways to improve the political participation of the Gitanos, by making a comparison with the women’s rights movement. The methodology of this paper combines a bibliographical review with semi-structured interviews of key stakeholders from governmental and non-governmental organizations working for the integration of Gitanos in Spain. These stakeholders include FAGA, the Union Romani, the Centro Socio-Cultural Gitano Andaluz, and the Consejo estatal del pueblo Gitano y Secretaría de Estado para la igualdad y la no-discriminación.
