520 _aPolitical caricature, nude books and Catholic pastoral movies, there are some disconcerting careers; Vignola’s is one of them. Around 1900, Vignola symbolizes all the contradictions of a changing society. In the divided France at the turn of the century, his beliefs lead him to make numerous satirical, sometimes violent, illustrations for the antirepublican and antidreyfusardpress. But soon, while the separation between State and Church was being pronounced, he had already turned towards the production of nude books—a great success of this time. Finally, and against all expectations, his last adventure will be with La Bonne Presse in 1907, becoming one of the most prolific producers of catholic pastoral movies. His career, at first glance disconcerting, is the history of a man guided solely by his spiritual convictions.
