520 _aFrom the end of 2018 to the beginning of 2020, the Yellow Vests movement gave rise to multiple forms of protest writing, none of which were truly unprecedented in the history of social movements in France. Yet the uniqueness of writing practices associated with these protests, when examined through the lens of the anthropology of writing, lies in the connections established between the banners on the occupied roundabouts, the inscriptions on the safety vests worn by protesters, and the graffiti scrawled during the demonstrations. In particular, the analysis shows the importance of graffiti inscribed on 1 December 2018 on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris with regard to legitimizing the speech of neglected individuals, as well as establishing an agenda for collective writing.
