La contagion a-t-elle touché des pays proches sur le plan des fondamentaux (contagion discriminante), au-delà des canaux traditionnels de transmission des chocs, ou a-t-elle frappé des pays sans discernement en raison d’un mouvement de défiance généralisé (contagion pure) ? Les résultats des tests économétriques réalisés sur un échantillon de pays émergents de 1994 à 2004 montrent que la crise thaïlandaise a bien provoqué un changement de comportement de la part des investisseurs, que l’on peut assimiler à de la contagion pure.Classification JEL: E44; F32; G15. | ||
| 520 | _aThe aim of this paper is to analyse investor sentiment during the 1997 Asian financial crisis as a factor of the crisis and of its contagion. Were emerging countries affected by this contagion because of very similar fundamentals (discriminating contagion), outside classical channels of transmission of an external chock, or because of abrupt reversals in investor sentiment (pure contagion) ? The results of the tests showed that the Thai crisis actually created a change in investor sentiment that was pure contagion. The results of econometric tests applied to a sample of emerging countries for the years 1994-2004 indicate that the crisis in Thailand induced a reversal in investor sentiment, to be compared with pure contagion. The other factors that spread the crisis depend on the countries, their geographical location and how far they were involved in the root causes of the crisis. JEL Classification: E44; F32; G15. | ||
