520			_aBrecht began a search early in his career for a great dramatic form which, in opposition to Lukács, he defined during his exile as “realistic” in a constant relationship between “old” and “new”. In East Germany in his quest for new forms for contemporary material he had nevertheless to resort to adaptation. Confronting the public with its own tradition, he wanted to make them active actors in and producers of history.

Auf der Suche nach neuen Formen für die gegenwärtigen Stoffe mußte er dann in der DDR systematisch auf die Bearbeitung zurückgreifen, um das Theater und sein Publikum mit der eigenen Tradition und Geschichte zu konfrontieren und produktiv zu machen.
