520			_aEn tant qu’êtres humains, nous avons tous reçu le cadeau empoisonné de savoir par avance que nous mourrons. Cette conscience de notre future mort est à même de déclencher une terreur existentielle tout au long de notre vie. Dès lors, nous luttons désespérément pour éloigner ce sinistre savoir. Cette lutte passe par la mise en place de mécanismes spécifiques ; la religion, notamment, s’inscrit intuitivement comme un tampon efficace. Il s’agit désormais de questionner l’apport réel de la religion dans cette lutte contre notre anxiété vis à vis de la mort, mais également de comprendre comment se situe la religion par rapport à la rationalité humaine, ou encore l’utilisation qu’en fait la société.
520			_aReligion in Terror ManagementAs human beings, we have all received the poisoned chalice of knowing in advance that we are going to die. This awareness of our future death has the potential to trigger existential angst throughout our lives. Thenceforth, we fight desperately to keep this grim knowledge at bay. This struggle relies on specific mechanisms ; as part of them, religion is intuitively seen as a powerful buffer. We should now question the real contribution of religion in the struggle against the anxiety of death, and try to understand how religion fits in with human rationality, and how society uses it.
