Bien que l’on croie parfois que les écrits ethnographiques sont objectifs, toute description est en réalité marquée et orientée par une théorie. À travers l’examen de la façon dont le chamanisme a été traité, l’auteur montre qu’expliciter les présupposés théoriques qui les sous-tendent permettrait d’obtenir de meilleures ethnographies.

Although ethnographic writing is often described as objective, every ethnographic description is always biased by an underlying theory. Through a discussion of how the phenomenon of shamanism has been treated by ethnographers the author shows that better ethnographies could be obtained by making theoretical presuppositions explicit and visible.
