520			_aRésuméDans l’Europe du xvie siècle, des naturalistes, des médecins, des théologiens protestants émettent des doutes sur l’existence et l’intervention dans les affaires humaines des anges, démons et âmes des défunts. Un érudit français, Pierre Le Loyer, prend la défense, à la fin du siècle, des thèses soutenues par les théologiens catholiques au sujet de ces Esprits. Il propose même en 1605 d’élaborer une science relative à leur apparition dans l’imagination : il la nomme science des Spectres. Il tente ainsi d’introduire ce thème dans les sciences humaines, qui vont prendre leur essor au xviie siècle, indépendamment de la théologie.
