Désignant une portion imprécise de l’espace que la géographie n’a cessé de vouloir définir, il est l’objet d’une multiplicité de sens. À la suite d’une analyse de l’évolution de cette notion au cours du xxe siècle, on se propose de définir son usage actuel.

It designates a vague portion of space that geographers ever tried to define and that has been given multiple definitions. After analysing the evolution of this notion in the 20th century we propose a definition of its present use.

Er bezeichnet einen unbestimmten Raumabschnitt, den die Geographen immer versucht haben zu bestimmen und dem mehrere Definitionen gegeben wurden.
