520			_aRésuméLe développement de la folkloristique et de l’ethnologie en Irlande peut se lire à travers l’histoire de la discipline, telle qu’elle se reflète dans la carrière de ses chercheurs. La biographie de l’auteur, sa formation en tant qu’enseignant-chercheur notamment, est ainsi exposée pour montrer l’émergence d’un regard scientifique à partir d’un contexte d’oralité vernaculaire. Un programme de recherche portant sur un quartier de la ville de Cork, le Northside, permet d’illustrer l’application de ce regard à la pratique de l’ethnologie urbaine en Irlande.
520			_aThe development of Folkloristics and Ethnology in Ireland may be considered in a framework that perceives disciplinary history as reflected in the careers of practitioners of the discipline. In particular, the story of the author’s own formation as a teacher/researcher is outlined to suggest the emergence of academic insight from a background of vernacular orality. The application of such insight to the practise of urban ethnology in Ireland is illustrated in terms of a research programme in urban ethnology on Cork’s Northside.

Die Biographie des Autors sowie seine wissenschaftliche Ausbildung werden in diesem Artikel herangezogen, um die wissenschaftliche Bedeutung regionaler mündlicher Überlieferungen hervorzuheben. Am Beispiel einer Untersuchung des Stadtteils Northside (Cork) wird die Bedeutung dieser praktischen Herangehensweise an die irische Stadtethnologie verdeutlicht.
