520			_aRésuméAu cœur de la métropole parisienne, les Halles forment un site largement souterrain, à la fois espace d’interconnexion des réseaux et centre commercial. Situant plus de 3 millions de personnes à moins d’une demi-heure du centre de Paris, l’ancien « ventre » de la capitale concentre les flux et prolonge les logiques labyrinthiques du métro. Espace de transit oppressant pour beaucoup mais également lieu mythique associé aux cultures urbaines et au mouvement hip-hop pour d’autres, les Halles produisent une vie sous sol particulière. Cet article est fondé sur une enquête de terrain réalisée à la croisée de l’ethnographie, de la sémiotique et de l’anthropologie visuelle.

Controlled Flows, Controlled GazeLes Halles is a largely subterranean site at the heart of the Paris metropolis that serves as both a major transport network hub and a shopping centre. Placing more than three million people less than half an hour from the centre of Paris, what was once called the “belly” of the capital concentrates passenger flows and extends the labyrinthine logic of the Metro. For many, it is an oppressive space to pass through, but for others it is also a mythological place associated with urban culture and the hip hop movement. The subject of this article is the unique underground life produced by Les Halles. It is based on fieldwork combining approaches from ethnography, semiotics, and visual anthropology.
520			_aZusammenfassungIm Herzen der Pariser Metropole bilden les Halles – der Platz der ehemaligen Markthallen von Paris – eine riesige unterirdische Fläche, die als Knotenpunkt des Pariser S- und U-Bahnnetzes und als Einkaufzentrum dient. In diesem ehemaligen „Bauch von Paris“ konzentriert und verlängert sich nicht nur die Logik des Pariser Untergrundsystems. Les Halles sind Transitzone für viele, sie sind aber auch ein mythischer Ort der Stadtkulturen, der Hip-Hop- und anderer Bewegungen ; sie bergen ein besonderes unterirdisches Leben in sich. Dieser Artikel ist das Ergebnis einer Studie, die sowohl ethnographische, semiotische wie auch Aspekte der visuellen Anthropologie vereint.
