Il revient sur l’hommage collectif qui lui fut rendu entre 1906 et 1908, dans le cadre d’un concours d’éloquence organisé par l’Académie française. Après avoir exposé les enjeux institutionnels du concours et tracé le profil des candidats, on s’efforce de mesurer la part des dimensions respectivement politique et disciplinaire dans les manuscrits reçus par l’Académie. Exactement contemporain d’une violente controverse sur les Origines de la France contemporaine, le concours ne peut faire l’économie d’une réflexion politique sur l’héritage tainien. Mais le prix d’éloquence se veut avant tout un lieu consensuel. De ce fait, la plupart des candidats insistent davantage sur la nécessaire mise à jour disciplinaire d’une œuvre qu’ils jugent à la fois fondamentale et datée. L’émergence des spécialités disqualifiant l’ambition totalisante du projet tainien, le procès de la méthode tourne alors au bilan intellectuel d’une génération. | ||

It looks back at the collective tribute paid to him between 1906 and 1908, in the context of an eloquence contest organized by the Académie française.
