The following article presents a selected survey of symptomatic attempts to integrate the new China in our, European or Western, perception of the world of the twenty first century. Some are sceptical and emphasize the dangers of a strange system of values and an unstable political and social system; others are more confident and trust in the capacity of adaptation and evolution of the Chinese elites and structures—the range of divergent interpretations is particularly wide, in this case. Finally, one of the most exciting intellectual challenges is a long-term comparison between ‘East’ and ‘West’, as Ian Morris tries to work out; his contribution deserves specific attention. | ||
