Il récuse dans un premier temps le raisonnement de l’école culturaliste qui se fonde sur trois notions : celles d’ intégration, de territorialité et de centralité. Après avoir interrogé les apports de Lévi-Strauss et Marcel Mauss à cette réflexion sur l’identité, il se rallie à la notion de « désenclavement » pour penser le processus de construction des identités nationales qui restent cependant précaires. Le mouvement de mondialisation tend en effet à faire émerger des « identités déterritorialisées » qui ne s’imposent pas de façon égale car elles sont surdéterminées par des jeux et des positions de pouvoir qui les obligent à diverses formes de négociation.
