Depuis 1945 jusqu’à la chute du mur de Berlin (1989), l’URSS a ressayé de s’imposer dans un port en mer chaude dans une optique mackindérienne d’occupation du globe. Cette politique a été largement combattue par les États-Unis qui, grâce aux Britanniques, ont obtenu la meilleure position de l’océan Indien, clé des conflits des secteurs à risque de la région, Diego Garcia.
