L’appropriation du christianisme par les insulaires est le fruit de la rencontre entre leurs sociétés et les missions chrétiennes. Ce contact s’amplifia tout au long du xixe siècle, et suscita diverses réactions qui vont de l’adoption immédiate au rejet énergique. Notre article se propose d’analyser les modalités de cette rencontre, notamment sous l’angle d’une étude globale sur la diffusion des protestantismes en Mélanésie. L’expansion des protestantismes en Mélanésie se caractérise par l’utilisation d’autochtones dans les stratégies de diffusions. Des autochtones qui à leur tour utilisent les voies diplomatiques traditionnelles, ou « sentier coutumier », pour s’assurer le succès de leur entreprise. Notre article dresse un portrait général des stratégies d’évangélisation. | ||

The islanders’ appropriation of Christianity is the fruit of the encounter between their societies and the Christian missions. This contact developed throughout the 19th century, provoking various reactions ranging from immediate adoption to violent rejection. The aim of our article is to analyse the forms that this encounter took, particularly through a general study of the propagation of Protestantism in Melanesia. The spread of Protestantism in Melanesia is characterized by the use of indigenous people in propagation strategies, indigenous people who, in turn, use traditional diplomatic routes, or “customary paths” to ensure the success of their undertaking. Our article endeavours to paint a general picture of the evangelization strategies. | ||
