Mais c’est occulter l’ambivalence de la formule, dont Gambetta lui-même donne des interprétations divergentes à quelques années d’intervalle : appel à la révolution ou souci d’offrir à la République une nouvelle élite ? Alors que Gambetta opère son ralliement à l’opportunisme, il travaille à donner un nouveau sens à son propre discours. | ||

But this perspective tends to underestimate the ambivalence of the formula, which Gambetta himself explained in divergent ways over time: call for revolution or desire to give the Republic a new elite?
