Engagé aux côtés de Michel Rocard au PSU, puis au Parti socialiste, il s’est inscrit dans les orientations du socialisme autogestionnaire et de la « deuxième gauche ». Dans le mouvement de Mai 68, son engagement a été nourri par le dialogue avec des jésuites et des dominicains pour faire le lien entre valeurs humaines et valeurs chrétiennes. Si être socialiste et chrétien reste un défi, il peut être tenu, dans une exigence de laïcité, grâce aux avancées de Vatican II.
520			_aA former national leader of the JEC, Robert Chapuis experienced the crises that affected the Catholic Action movement at the time of the Algerian War. Closely involved in the PSU and, later, the Socialist Party alongside Michel Rocard, Chapuis was committed to the goals and ideals of self-managed socialism and the “Second Left”. During the events of May 1968, his commitment was fueled by dialogue with Jesuits and Dominicans, with whom he sought to create a bridge linking human and Christian values. It remains challenging to be both socialist and Christian. In an age of secularism, the progress achieved under Vatican II allows one to meet that challenge.
