Il montre que l’angle mort des utopies universalistes (République mondiale, concorde planétaire), mises à mal par l’histoire récente, est le poids du passé et des marqueurs identitaires des nations, atout ou obstacle dans la construction des alliances internationales et l’élargissement des fédérations interétatiques, dont l’UE est représentative.

Universalist utopias that envision a world republic or planetary harmony have been challenged by recent history, and this article shows that their blind spot is the weight of the past and markers of national identity. These can serve as an asset or an obstacle for the construction of international alliances and the enlargement of supranational federations, of which the EU is the representative example.
