520 _aAmong the agones dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian, the Hadrianeia of Ephesus are the best documented ones, both in terms of epigraphic and numismatic evidence. The still unresolved issue concerning these games is the year in which they first took place. This paper aims to identify the first year of the Hadrianeia as 131 AD, by means of the analysis of the epigraphic evidence, with special focus on the first two letters written by Hadrian to “The travelling thymelic synod of the sacred-victor stephanitic technitae attached to Dionysus” and preserved in a stele found in Alexandreia Troas.
