520 | _aThe aim of this paper is not to study specific crafts but, rather, to offer a reflection on women’s work in Roman society and on the complexity of the issue as an object of investigation. Missing from historiography until a few decades ago, the economic role that women played in the past is nowadays being re-considered. Grounded in historical, economic, and sociological analysis, this paper looks in depth at certain terms associated with female labor and relies on comparisons with other historical periods with a view to a survey of working women in ancient Rome. | ||
