520 _aCo-parenting is defined as the instrumental and emotional support parents bring to each other when raising a child. For several years, studies and clinical experience have shown that cooperative co-parenting is a key variable of the well-being of the family and the development of the child. This paper first presents the current theories about co-parenting and their components, and the consequences on the child of co-parental conflict and competition. It then reviews the variables explaining individual differences in co-parenting, such as marital satisfaction or child temperament. Lastly, it discusses the possible therapies for co-parenting, which aim at improving the cooperation between parents in divorced and in distressed couples.
