Elles durent en principe une centaine de jours et impliquent des dons continus de nourriture, d’argent et de nattes. L’argument de cet essai est que cette mobilisation de ressources matérielles – dans laquelle chaque prestation prend concrètement une forme matérielle – produit des effets qui concernent directement à la fois le chemin du défunt dans le monde des morts et les relations entre ses parents vivants.
520			_aThe process of mortuary ceremony is the most comprehensive of the Northern Vanuatu staging of material exchanges. Ideally it goes on for a hundred days and involves continual prestations of food, money and mats. The argument in this essay is that this mobilization of material resourses, each prestation standing as a concrete material performance, produces effects that are directly instrumental both in the path of the deceased towards the realm of the dead and in the relationships between the living relatives.
