520			_aLe 30 juin 1909, Marius Archambault, directeur des Postes et Télégraphes à Nouméa, se voyait confier par l’État français une mission archéologique en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Le fonctionnaire s’intéressait déjà, depuis plus de dix ans, aux pétroglyphes présents sur la Grande Terre, productions qu’il croyait étrangères aux Kanak avec qui il cohabitait. Cherchant ailleurs l’origine de ces gravures sur roches, Marius Archambault collecta et documenta néanmoins des typologies d’objets kanak variées, qui dotent a posteriori sa mission d’un caractère ethnographique. Cet article vise, à travers l’étude d’un corpus issu de diverses institutions et aujourd’hui réuni au musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, à éclairer le déroulement d’une mission, la pensée d’un homme et leurs conséquences sur la matérialité d’une collection ainsi que la persistance d’idées reçues.

For more than ten years, the civil servant had been interested in the main island’s petroglyphs, which he believed to be foreign to the Kanak people. Looking elsewhere for the origin of these rock engravings, Marius Archambault nevertheless collected and documented various types of Kanak objects, which – a posteriori – endowed his mission with an ethnographic character. Through the study of a corpus coming from various institutions and now gathered at the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, this article aims, to shed light on the unfolding of a mission, the thought processes of the man behind it, and their consequences on the materiality of a collection and the persistence of preconceived ideas.
