Partant de l’hypothèse de La Fauci (1988) selon laquelle de tels participes seraient caractérisés par la syntaxe moyenne, on discute d’une sous-classe de participes qui, à première vue, semblerait infirmer cette hypothèse (par ex. manciata ‘ayant déjà mangé’, litt. ’mangée’). Sur des preuves italo-romanes comparatives, on établit que les participes en question constituent des adjectifs qui manifestent toutes les propriétés diagnostiques de la syntaxe moyenne. Une analyse sémantique et morphologique de la dérivation de tels participes adjectivaux à partir des participes verbaux, corrobore entièrement l’hypothèse originelle de La Fauci à propos de leur syntaxe moyenne. | ||

Middle constructions with result-state participles in Italian and in the southern Italo-Romance dialects This article deals with past participles which are used attributively or predicatively to express resultant states (e.g., invecchiata ‘aged’). Starting from La Fauci’s (1988) claim that such participles involve middle syntax, the authors focus on a subclass which would at first seem to challenge the said claim (ex. manciata ‘having already eaten’, lit. ’eaten. F’). In the light of comparative evidence from Italo-Romance, it is first established that the past participles in question are adjectives, indeed exhibiting all the diagnostics of middle syntax. Then a semantic and morphological analysis of the derivation of these adjectival participles from verbal ones is developed which fully supports La Fauci’s original claim about their syntax. | ||
