520 _aThe 2008-2009 recession caused heavy job losses. However, the measures taken during the crisis limited the adjustment of employment over the total crisis period by comparison with the magnitude of the economic shock (measures included the extension of part-time work, and hiring subsidies through waivers of employers’ social security contributions at minimum-wage level for firms with fewer than ten employees). At the start of the recession, the adjustment was concentrated in temporary-agency work. Senior employment proved resilient. Wages slowed as unemployment increased. Overall, the total wage bill in the mainly non-farm market sectors declined in 2009, but by less than value added. This caused an increase in the share of wages in value added.
