| 520 | _aEarly Seventeenth century France experienced an unprecedented vogue of satirical literature of all kinds. Marked by burlesque aggression, this vogue also affected religious preaching and controversy. Commissioned by their congregation, polemists used the weapons of profane literature ad majorem gloriam Dei. Among them, the Jesuit François Garasse stood as a formidable pamphleteer. He drew inspiration from Lucian, Rabelais and Regnier using their profane writing techniques to serve the Christian cause. We show here how the reading of these authors helped Garasse shape his poetics of libel. | ||
