520 _aOn June 1, 2018, at 4, rue de Marignan in Paris, workers rediscovered a painting, The Entry of the Marquis de Nointel into Jerusalem. This painting was part of a cycle of four commissioned by Nointel, French ambassador to Turkey between 1670 to 1680, to commemorate some of the great events that had taken place during his embassy—in this case, Nointel’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on March 15, 1673. Originally intended to adorn the ceremonial hall of the Palais de France, Nointel brought back his paintings in 1680. We next see them in the Château de Bercy in 1713, where they remained until 1860, when the paintings were sold to a banker. Only two remain today, those that were hung in his apartment at 4, rue de Marignan.
