520 _aThe paper aims to explain the choice of water supply by urban households using microdata from Dakar (Senegal). Using data obtained on 301 households, we estimate a bivariate probit model to explain households’ decision to opt for a private water connection at home and/or obtain water from a public standpipe. The paper adds to the small stock of literature on household water supply in Africa. In particular, we show that the status of the household head (widow) in addition to the quality of the supply service have a significant impact on household choices.
