245 0 0 _aEmotion regulation in adolescence: A variety of strategy profiles in relation to emotion regulation abilities

520 _aEmotion regulation is crucial for the psychosocial adjustment of adolescents. Research suggests that strategy repertoires, or profiles, are a promising avenue for explaining inter-individual differences in adolescents’ emotion regulation. In addition, some authors distinguish strategies, which refer to the actions people take to regulate their emotions (e.g., distraction), from abilities, which refer to the effectiveness of emotion regulation (e.g., control of experience and behavior). This study aimed to (1) identify profiles of emotion regulation strategies in situations of sadness, fear, and anger, and (2) characterize these profiles in terms of the levels of competence reported by the adolescents. The sample consisted of 1076 adolescents (Mage = 14.5; SD = 1.55). Results showed a variety of profiles, varying in part according to the emotion considered. In each emotional situation, these profiles, characterized by the use of one or more strategies, were associated with different levels of emotion regulation abilities (i.e., control of experience and dysregulation). The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed in light of the role that context plays in adolescents’ emotion regulation.
