Le choix de trois quantifieurs prototypiques ( quelques, beaucoup et plusieurs) permet de vérifier l’effet de mécanismes marquant le degré (l’accent d’insistance, la modification de degré, la réduplication). Les attestations et les données construites démontrent que l’évocation d’une échelle partiellement ordonnée permet aux quantifieurs beaucoup et plusieurs une interprétation de degré, qui est spontanément indisponible avec le quantifieur sans valeur scalaire inhérente qu’est quelques, que néanmoins une cœrcion contextuelle peut imposer. L’analyse donne des repères explicites et transférables pour débrouiller la scalarité, l’intensité, l’affectivité, le degré et la quantification.
520			_aFocusing on quantityThis work assesses degree readings relating to quantification, about which a number ofimpressionistic claims are being made in recent studies. It does so by looking at the reading emerging from a selection of standard French quantifiers ( quelques ‘some-PL’, beaucoup ‘many’ and plusieurs ‘several’) and mechanisms of degree marking (focus, degree modifier, reduplication of the quantifier). Based on attested and elicited data, degree readings are shown to obtain with vague quantifiers that imply a partially-ordered scale ; inherently non-scalar items like some are not spontaneously amenable to a degree reading, although this can be coerced. The analysis provides transferable results that help clarify the relation between scalarity in its different instantiations, axiological readings, degree interpretations and quantification.
