L’interprétation de ces relations se fait en deux étapes : (i) l’actualisation du terme dépendant a pour effet d’inscrire dans le savoir partagé (ou mémoire discursive) une variable d’un certain type dont il dépend ; (ii) l’actualisation du second terme y verse ensuite une valeur particulière, qui peut être attribuée à la variable via une opération logique d’unification. Ce mécanisme « variable provisoire, puis unification » est illustré par des suites qui contiennent une insertion parenthétique. Celle-ci vient dissocier les deux étapes du processus, entraînant parfois des perturbations de la seconde.
