520			_aLe matamore gascon connaît un succès considérable sur la scène française au XVIIe siècle. Entre matamore gascon, Gascon et faux Gascons, nous proposons un bref panorama du type et de ses déclinaisons. Comme en reflet, les dramaturges occitans inventent le type comique du francimand, matamore dont la tentative de francisation laborieuse provoque le rire des occitanophones. La mise en regard de ces deux figures révèle une élaboration complexe sous-tendue par la question diglossique.

Between “Gascon braggart”, “Gascon” and “false Gascons”, we offer a brief overview of the type and its variations. In order to mirror this practice, Occitan playwrights invented the comic type called “francimand”, a braggart whose Frenchifying laborious attempts provoke laughter amongst Occitan’s speakers. The confrontation of these two figures reveals a complex development underpinned by the diglossic question.
