Dans son Della christiana moderazione del theatro, le jésuite Ottonelli propose une compréhension tolérante de ce théâtre, fondée sur la règle ad evitandum majus malum. Cette tolérance masque une forte hostilité aux dispositifs perceptifs et aux usages pervers du langage théâtral, tout en suggérant aux chrétiens des formes de restriction mentale pour atteindre le salut.
