En explorant les usages de l’expression « ouvrier-machine » et les interprétations contradictoires qu’elle suscite dans la première moitié du xixe siècle chez les théoriciens de l’économie politique et parmi les artisans et ouvriers qui prennent la plume pour décrire leur condition de travail, l’enjeu est d’explorer la généalogie et les fonctions de ce thème de l’homme-machine. De la condamnation morale de l’ouvrier aliéné et esclave du machinisme à la célébration de l’ouvrier devenu « pure intelligence », tout un spectre de significations s’élabore pour caractériser cette figure nouvelle aux premiers temps de l’âge industriel et ainsi tenter d’en fixer les contours et les significations.
520			_aThe figure of the “machine-worker” – which the publicist Lemontey described in 1801 as “timid and sedentary”, “prodigiously ignorant, credulous and superstitious” – was the object of recurring debate at the beginning of the industrialization. In exploring the uses of the expression “machine-worker” and the contradictory interpretations which it provoked in the first half of the nineteenth century among the theoricians of political economy and among craftsmen and workers who try to describe their condition of work, the aim of this paper is to explore the genealogy and functions of this human-machine theme. From the moral condemnation of the alienated and enslaved worker to the celebration of the worker as a “pure intelligence,” a whole spectrum of meanings is elaborated to characterize this new figure in the beginning of industrial age and thus endeavoring to define its contours and meanings.
