520			_aEn guise d’introduction, on rappelle ici d’abord la multiplicité et la diversité des œuvres de Diderot relevant de la fiction narrative en prose, ainsi que l’ambition philosophique et critique qui en fait le point commun. On essaie ensuite de comprendre, en s’appuyant sur un commentaire de l’ Éloge de Richardson, la manière dont Diderot conçoit l’unité profonde, dans son approche du romanesque, entre l’exigence de vérité, la pédagogie morale et la réussite esthétique. À la lumière de ce témoignage particulier, on espère aussi, de manière plus générale, apprendre à lire les romans du dix-huitième siècle avec une plus grande lucidité quant au système d’évaluation dans lequel ils étaient produits et reçus.

Diderot, the Novel, Morality, and TruthBy way of introduction, notice is first taken of the number and variety of Diderot’s narrative prose fictions, as well as of the philosophical and critical ambition they share. The issue is then to understand, through a commentary of his Éloge de Richardson ( In Praise of Richardson), the way in which Diderot conceives in his novels of the unity between the search for truth, the teaching of ethics, and aesthetic success. More broadly, we hope this specific text can help produce better readings of 18th century novels, with greater lucidity as to the value system in which they were produced and read.
