520 _aThrough the examination of two recent books, this article aims at showing that, contrary to a common opinion, it is impossible to prove with certainty the Semitic origin of a pre-Hellenistic Greek word, although the borrowing of the Greek alphabet seems to imply possibly concomitant lexical borrowings. In compensation, what seems feasible is to collect quite a large number of recurrent coincidences that tend to reduce the part of hazard.
