L’instabilité énonciative de ces deux textes y fragilise la notion de personnage. Il s’agit de montrer comment un système de valeurs est véhiculé sans passer par l’identité d’un personnage mais en se fondant sur l’évocation d’une sensorialité commune au vivant, qu’il s’agisse d’humain ou de non humain comme c’est le cas en particulier dans l’ Histoire véritable grâce au procédé de la métempsycose. L’ Histoire véritable, au même titre que les Lettres persanes, illustre ainsi la manière dont l’écriture de Montesquieu interroge les mécanismes de projection dans l’altérité à travers des dispositifs fictionnels qui ne sont pas centrés autour de la notion de personnage.
520			_aThe starting point for this article is the problematic narrativity of the Histoire veritable which, in common with the Lettres persanes, displays a narrative discontinuity and a multiplicity of points of view. The enunciative instability of these two texts weakens the very notion of character. We aim to show how a system of values is conveyed without relying on the identity of a character but by evoking the common sensoriality of all living beings, whether they be human or non-human, perfectly exemplified by the process of metempsicosis portrayed in the Histoire veritable. The Histoire veritable, like the Lettres persanes, thus illustrates how Montesquieu’s writing questions the mechanisms of projection into otherness through fictional devices that are not centred around the notion of character.
