520			_aMontesquieu a connu dans les premières décennies du Japon moderne une fortune particulière. Avec De l’esprit des lois, il est l’auteur français le plus traduit, notamment parce que le nouvel État, aspirant à bâtir des institutions modernes, fait grand cas des études juridiques françaises, malgré un tropisme anglo-saxon. Les traducteurs offrent du reste un profil très proche puisqu’ils ont tous été employés du gouvernement et sont liés les uns aux autres autour de Mitsukuri Rinshô. Le confucianisme et son vocabulaire politique jouent un rôle essentiel dans la difficile compréhension des concepts de liberté et de loi. Mais le texte est lu et utilisé dans une perspective bien différente des attentes autoritaires de ce dernier, puisque les partisans du Mouvement pour la liberté et les droits du peuple s’approprient le texte. L’intellectuel Nakae Chômin joue en la matière un rôle tout aussi central que celui qu’il a tenu pour l’introduction de Rousseau.
520			_aMontesquieu enjoyed a particular fortune in the first decades of modern Japan. Thanks to The Spirit of the Laws , he was the most translated French author, especially because the new state, aspiring to build modern institutions, had a special interest in French legal studies, despite the domination of English intellectual world. The translators were very similar as they were all government employees and linked to each other around Mitsukuri Rinshô. Confucianism and its political vocabulary played an essential role in the difficult understanding of the concepts of liberty and law. The text was read a very different way from the authoritarian expectations of the government, since supporters of the Movement for the Liberty and Rights of the People used the text to promote democracy. The intellectual Nakae Chômin played here a role as central as he had in introducing Rousseau.
