Celle-ci court depuis sa fondation en 1898, en pleine affaire Dreyfus, jusqu’à sa disparition temporaire en 1940, avec la spoliation de ses archives par les autorités nazies installées en France. La question du rapport avec les sphères de pouvoir constitue un axe fort du livre. La variété des domaines dans lesquels la Ligue inscrit son action est frappante (police des mœurs, justice militaire, syndicalisation et droit de grève, laïcité, droit de vote des femmes, fait colonial etc.). Cette analyse permet de voir de quelle façon la Ligue a été à la fois réceptacle et animatrice de la réflexion sur les droits de l’homme.

The relationship with the spheres of power is one of the overarching themes of the book. The variety of fields covered by the League’s action is astonishing (policing of morals, military justice, unionization and the right to strike, laïcité, women’s right to vote, etc.). This analysis shows how the League has been both a receptacle of and a facilitator for the reflection on human rights.
