520			_aRoland Dorgelès s’est forgé une patrie essentiellement imaginaire et littéraire, peut-être destinée à pallier l’absence de racines authentiques. Toute sa vie et sa carrière apparaissent en effet comme une succession de déracinements, depuis la distance avec les origines familiales jusqu’à l’éloignement géographique des voyages en passant par la rupture radicale de la guerre. Ce sont là autant de départs qui préparent le seul retour qui vaille : le retour vers soi-même et vers les autres qui s’accomplit dans et par l’écriture.

His whole life and career indeed appear as a succession of uprootings, from the distance with family origins to the geographical remoteness of travels through the radical break of war. These are all departures that prepare for the only worthwhile return: the return to oneself and to others that is accomplished in and through writing.
