Nul doute pourtant qu’il s’agit là de l’ opus magnum de l’académicien. Ce dernier prend d’ailleurs la peine d’avertir son lecteur dans l’avant-propos : « Aucun [livre] ne m’a coûté autant, ni retenu aussi longtemps, justement parce que l’ascension n’avait jamais été aussi rude ni aussi belle » (p. 9).
