| 520 | _aL’anthropologie, fille et mère du grand partage, cette rupture radicale entre nature et culture que Philippe Descola nomme « naturalisme », a parfois tendance à le remettre en cause aujourd’hui. C’est en partant de ce paradoxe que cet article se demande s’il est vraiment possible de ne pas être naturaliste quand on est anthropologue et ce que cela apporte d’un point de vue épistémologique. Pour le savoir, il analyse la façon dont les non-humains surnaturels – esprits, démons, etc. – ont été traités par quelques « classiques » de l’anthropologie, et observe, ainsi, le parti pris naturaliste de leurs auteur·rice·s. Cela le conduit à recenser, en conclusion, les outils qui ont participé (et participent encore aujourd’hui) à une montée en réflexivité de l’anthropologie à propos du naturalisme, et à proposer une méthodologie en accord avec l’histoire de cette discipline pour enquêter sur la magie. | ||

Starting from this paradox, this article examines whether it’s really possible not to be a naturalist when you’re an anthropologist, and what it means from an epistemological point of view. In order to find this out, it analyses the way in which supernatural non-humans – spirits, demons, etc. – have been treated by some of the « classics » of the anthropological literature, and observes the naturalistic approach of their authors. In conclusion, it identifies the tools that have contributed (and still contribute) to anthropology’s growing reflexivity about naturalism, and proposes a consistent methodology for investigating magic. | ||
