520			_aRésuméL’anti-américanisme gagne à la confusion qui perdure avec l’héritage gaulliste, mais cette confusion est illégitime. L’anti-américanisme français ne fait que souligner l’affaiblissement de nos institutions politiques, et notamment de la présidence, tant au plan intérieur qu’au plan international. La nouvelle présidence pourrait cependant enrayer cette tendance. Souligner les échos du néoconservatisme américain dans le débat politique français est à cet égard instructif. Il reste qu’une cassure s’est produite dans les relations transatlantiques, et que ses ressorts culturels sont plus subtils que les réflexes anti-américains habituels. L’impact de la politique américaine aura été la prise de conscience, de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique, que l’alliance euro-américaine ne serait plus ce qu’elle avait été pendant soixante ans.

French anti-americanism only sheds light on the domestic and international weakening of French institutions, particularly the President. The new presidency may however turn that trend backward. Exploring the roots of neoconservatism allows fascinating comparisons between US conservatism and French politics. Although Iraq has created a break in Transatlantic relations, uncovering deep cultural differences buried during the Cold War, the challenges of globalisation and world peace should inform common thinking and cooperation between Europe and America.
