520			_aL’Ituri est devenu un Far West où la chasse au trésor est terrible. République bananière ougandaise, l’UPDF y fait et défait les rois au gré des intérêts de ses officiers. La revendication autonomiste sur fond de conflit ethnique, fonds de commerce politique et économique d’une élite de l’Ituri, permet à ces derniers de trouver des soutiens locaux. Elle sert ainsi à prolonger et à masquer l’occupation et le pillage. Des milices ethniques, des bandes armées rivales soutenues par différents clans de l’UPDF, voire des factions de celle-ci, s’y livrent une guerre impitoyable.

The claim for autonomy in the context of ethnic conflict, which is the political and economic fund of the Ituri elite, allows the latter to establish local support. This serves to prolong and mask occupation and pillage. Ethnic militias, armed gangs supported by different clans of the UPDF, and even its own internal factions are all involved in a ruthless struggle.
