La publication d’ouvrages historiques décrivant la violence britannique à l’égard de l’insurrection Mau-Mau et la préparation d’un procès à l’encontre de l’État britannique participent à la fabrication, historique et judiciaire, de mémoires disputées de ce passé colonial. Si ces mobilisations peuvent s’expliquer par des reconfigurations politiques nouvelles, elles expriment aussi des débats politiques anciens sur la légitimité des dirigeants postcoloniaux et sur les contours de la communauté nationale.
520			_aInvestigating colonial violence : history, justice and the memory of the Mau Mau insurrection in KenyaSince the December 2002 political change-over in Kenya, the colonial past has come back to haunt the political scene. Recent history books on the Mau Mau insurrection and the attempt by Kenyan, British lawyers and veterans associations to bring an action against the British government for war crimes have renewed a debate on the contested memories of the Mau Mau insurrection. Burgeoning in a new political environment, these scientific and judicial mobilizations can be seen as a way of engaging a debate on the legitimacy of political power and the identity of the national community in contemporary Kenyan society.
