In this interview, Achille Mbembe, who has (based on his own work on Fanon’s thought) actively engaged and debated with the students on the decolonisation of knowledge in South African universities, analyses how Fanon (as a totem or as a symbol, rather than through his specific concepts) has been mobilised in students’ discourses and struggles. Achille Mbembe warns against a simplistic reading of Fanon, which reduces The Wretched of the Earth to a straightforward justification of the use of violence, without considering Fanon’s simultaneous ethics of care. He calls for a decolonisation of knowledge that engages the world, rather than leading to a narrow parochialism.
