Là où nous posons trop fréquemment un regard binaire à leur endroit, les jugeant bénéfiques soit pour la démocratie, soit pour les visées populistes, une remise en contexte social de l’usage des technologies numériques permet de dépasser cette dichotomie. L’article défend l’idée que ces espaces communicationnels ne présentent pas stricto sensu une représentation fidèle du monde social mais plutôt son miroir déformant, qu’il convient d’étudier sous différents angles avant de se laisser aller à des jugements hâtifs et englobants sur leur vertu démocratique.
520			_aHave social media and the web encouraged public debate ? There has too frequently been a tendency to consider the new digital technologies with a binary approach, judging them beneficial either for democracy or for populist goals, but such a dichotomy can be overcome through the social contextualisation of the use of these technologies. The author argues that these communication spaces do not offer a faithful representation of the social world, but are rather a distorting mirror that we should analyse from different angles before rushing to hasty and global judgments regarding their democratic virtue.
